ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Optometrists are self-reliant healthcare specialists, who detect, diagnose, and provide initial assessment & Primary management of eye disease and proper referral for definite treatment. They make an extensive eye health assessment, offer clinical advice, prescribe spectacles or contact lenses, advice vision therapy, low vision services & visual rehabilitation and refer patients for further treatment, when necessary.

Throughout the four years, the students take courses that cover visual optics, visual neurophysiology and clinical techniques along with the health and diseases of the human visual system. The students will study Ocular Anatomy and Physiology, Ocular pharmacology, Clinical instruments, Binocular vision, Contact lens, Low vision, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Ethics and practice management.

The institution is housed at Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex campus because of the availability on necessary infrastructure and logistic services and supports particularly the clinical facilities. A separate Governing Body headed by Vice Chancellor, Chittagong Medical University is at the helm.

The institute is headed by a full time Director, native and foreign trained Optometry and Ophthalmology faculty members who look after the day to day academic and clinical activities.

The Institute (ICO) has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) where the graduate optometrists can have their postgraduate degrees. Along with the regular faculty members, the foreign faculties and part time faculty members covers substantial numbers of lectures.

Bachelor of Science in Optometry course has started its journey from 2010 under University of Chittagong. Now, the institute is conducting the course under Chittagong Medical University from 9th Batch in the session of 2017-2018. Till now, total 163 student’shave successfully completed their course and working in different sectors around the country.
